Thirty-three Greek women artists from various places, epochs and generations, using different expressive media, compose an artistic anthropological narrative around the social role and the position of women. The group exhibition «Women’s Matters», organized by the Municipality of Larissa at the Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – G.I. Katsigras Museum, curated by art historian Bia Papadopoulou, opened to the public on February 21, 2026. The official opening took place on March 14, 2026.

The works by the first three women artists of the newly-founded Greek state form the exhibition’s starting point: Eleni Boukouri-Altamoura, Thaleia Flora-Karavia and Sofia Laskaridou. With their bold, non-conventional conduct, their passion and devotion to art, they opened the path to other female artists, in a variety of ways. They enhance the exhibition with a historical background while their oeuvre and lives harmonically intertwine with the show’s conceptual rationale. A dialogue is, thus, established between the past and the present, also found in many works.
Paintings, drawings, photographs, prints, collages, installations, sculptures, videos, and performances speak about the female condition, in a multiplicity of voices. The pictorial narratives recount women’s systematic devaluation, oppression, exploitation, violence, hurting, trauma. They outline the binary dichotomy of power and subordination, trampled dreams, desires and hopes, fragility, loss, mourning, grief. They bring to the fore the tender but also turbulent, stormy female psyche, the archetypal wild element, the transgression of measure and limits, the daring, the combativeness, the instinct and the madness of anger and despair. They explore femininities and sexuality. They foreground the importance of the female body, associating women with nature, mother earth, the universe. They highlight the sacred role of women as vessels of a new life as well as the cynical capitalistic view that they are reproduction machines destined to serve primitive accumulation. The works seek liberation from constructed gender stereotypes, conventional roles, suffocating restrictions. They envision a world of solidarity, love, equality. A world full of respect and empathy.
“Women’s Matters” is an enlarged evolution of the homonymous exhibition that took place at the Municipal Art Gallery of Athens in 2024 in which seventeen living artists from different generations participated. The boosted project was conceived especially for the Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa- G.I. Katsigras Museum in relation to its architectural space.
