Municipal Gallery of Larissa- G.I. Katsigras Museum

The Municipal Gallery of Larissa- G.I. Katsigras Museum, from the first year of its foundation in 1983, till today has been fully integrated into the local society having also contributed to the full establishment of fine arts in the town of Larissa and its wide region in numerous ways.

The collection G.I. Katsigras, a donation of the well known surgeon and collector to the city of Larissa, is one of the most significant in the country and unique in the periphery. It comprises 781 paintings, carvings and drafts of important Greek artists for the period between 1850 and 1950. In 1981 the doctor and collector G.I. Katsigras donated his remarkable collection to the municipality of Larissa. After his death the collection was enriched by 1170 books on art, as well as the invaluable furniture which belonged to the renowned Heinrich Schliemann bought by the collector in 1955. As for his personal medical library it was donated to the Medical Association of Larissa. His 4500 literature books were donated to the municipality of Larissa.

At the new building of the Municipal Gallery of Larissa-Museum G.I. Katsigras, in the area of Neapoli, part of the collection is displayed with paintings of the following artists: Lytras, Iakovidis, Volanakis, Maleas, Parthenis, Triantafillidis, Gounaropoulos, Asteriadis, Vasiliou, Psihopedis, Bouzianis, Sikeliotis, Tassos, and various others as well as Heinrich Schlieman’s furniture.

Through a profound appeal to the senses the visitor is able to follow the course of Modern Greek Art, the evolution of trends and techniques and the influences it received by many schools and European fashions with a specific historical and social context.

The Gallery, focusing on artistic creativity organizes guided tours and educational programmes and thus offers the opportunity to students and adults fully understand the fine works of art considering it a result of correlations and interaction of the individual, social, political and financial factors.

At the new building there is also the “Free Artistic Workshop” which offers classes in: painting –design and ceramics for children and adults, iconography (hagiography), mosaic work and batik only for adults. The “Free Artistic Workshop”, which was founded in 1986, participates in exhibitions, panhellenic contests, programmes on fine arts, events like the making, procession and the burning of the carnival king, happenings like “Day without cars”, “kites”, “The Pinios river”. It also coordinates every creative attempt of the young people and upgrades the esthetic education of the public.

The is also a shop available which sells: copies of the paintings of the collection , post cards, books on art, ornamental items, items with stamped pictures like T-shirts, cups, puzzles, creations of the Benaki Museum, the museum of Cycladic Art-Foundation N. P. Goulandris and jewellery of well known artists.

The future aims of the Gallery are: collaborations with museums, galleries, Educational Foundations in Greece and abroad, exhibitions, invitations to artists, conferences on the History of Art, a library using as a nucleus the donated books of G.I. Katsigras, a bigger publishing range, meetings of sculptors of fraternized cities, symposium of Applied Arts, meetings of Municipal Artistic Workshops, Biennale of new artists, a School of Fine Arts to be established through the University of Thessaly.

The Municipal Gallery of Larissa-Museum G.I. Katsigras has the ambition to be a meeting point of the society of Larissa, to widen the expectations of the public, as far as Fine Arts are concerned, to awaken the citizens by participating in events and, therefore, to contribute to the cultural development of Larissa and to be the axis with an international impact

Συνεχίζεται το πρόγραμμα δωρεάν προβολών βραβευμένων κινηματογραφικών έργων για παιδιά στο χώρο της Βιβλιοθήκης της Δημοτικής Πινακοθήκης Λάρισας-Μουσείου Γ.Ι. Κατσίγρα με τίτλο «Μια Κυριακή στο μουσείο...αλλιώς!». Το πρόγραμμα, που εγκαινιάστηκε τον Φεβρουάριο, έχει σαν στόχο την παρουσίαση, με ελεύθερη είσοδο, στα παιδιά της πόλης ταινιών υψηλής ποιότητας, που έχουν βραβευτεί σε φεστιβάλ και θεματογραφούν όψεις της παιδικής ηλικίας, ώστε η επαφή με το μουσείο να βιώνεται με έναν εναλλακτικό τρόπο.

Την Κυριακή 5 Μαρτίου στις 11:30 θα προβληθεί η κινέζικη ταινία «Ο βασιλιάς των μασκών», κατάλληλη για παιδιά από 9 ετών.

Την Κυριακή στις 29 Ιανουαρίου και ώρα 19.00 μ.μ. «ζωντανεύει» ξανά η έκθεση «Fashion Now» στο αίθριο της Δημοτικής Πινακοθήκης Λάρισας – Μουσείο Γ.Ι. Κατσίγρα.

Το Θεσσαλικό μπαλέτο πλαισιώνει την έκθεση με την εντυπωσιακή χορογραφία “Vogue”, μεταφέροντας στο κοινό την αίσθηση μιας φωτογράφισης μόδας που βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη. Η χορογραφία φέρει την υπογραφή του ταλαντούχου καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή του μπαλέτου, Γκες Μίχωφ.
